The Problem Isn't Your Expertise

You may already be the most knowledgeable person in the room.

But technical expertise and communication expertise are different skills.

You can know exactly what the problem is and still struggle to explain:

"I know exactly why this matters. They don't."
You can see the risk clearly. Getting them to see it takes something more than technical accuracy.
"I say it's serious. They don't act like it."
Without a way to make severity land, "critical" and "minor" sound about the same to them.
"I tell them what to do. Nothing happens."
The recommendation was clear to you. It didn't turn into a decision on their end.
"They question the budget every time."
If they don't understand why it's worth it, the price is the only thing left to react to.
You explain more
They understand less

The solution isn't learning more cybersecurity. It's learning how to make the expertise you already have easier to understand.

What if you never had to explain it twice?

A Simple Framework for Explaining Complex Cybersecurity

Question → Point → Example → Takeaway

01
Question
What is the person actually trying to understand?
02
Point
What is the one thing they need to know?
03
Example
What makes the idea concrete and relevant to them?
04
Takeaway
What should they remember or do next?

This gives you a repeatable way to turn technical knowledge into clear communication.

Instead of simply explaining what a technology does, you help clients understand why it matters and what they should do about it.

In 3 Sessions, We Work on Your Real Communication

01

Explain Technical Topics Clearly

Learn how to simplify complex cybersecurity concepts without losing technical credibility. You'll work on:

  • Removing unnecessary jargon
  • Translating technical risk into practical consequences
  • Explaining ideas to different audiences
  • Making complex topics easier to remember
02

Prepare for Important Client Conversations

Bring your actual presentation, proposal, recommendation, or client conversation. Together, we'll clarify:

  • What your audience cares about
  • What they need to understand
  • The main point you want them to remember
  • The questions they're likely to ask
  • The action you want them to take
03

Answer Difficult Questions

Learn a repeatable way to handle questions like:

"Why do we need this?"
"How likely is that to happen?"
"Why should we spend money on this?"

You'll learn how to:

  • Understand the question behind the question
  • Make a clear point
  • Choose the right level of technical detail
  • Give a relevant example
  • Finish with a useful takeaway

You don't need to memorize every possible answer. You need a method for creating a clear answer in real time.

Who It's For

This is for cybersecurity professionals who need other people to understand the value of their expertise. You may be:

A cybersecurity consultant explaining risk to clients
A technical leader briefing executives
A security professional presenting recommendations
A cybersecurity founder selling expertise
A technical professional stepping into a more visible role

This is especially useful if you know the technical answer but struggle to make it clear to someone without your background.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who am I?
Darren Young

For the last 7 years, I've facilitated communication training for senior executives and technical experts.

My work focuses on helping people explain complex ideas to audiences who don't share their background or expertise.

That experience led me to develop the Question → Point → Example → Takeaway framework — a practical way to turn complex ideas into explanations people can understand, remember, and act on.

I'm now applying that framework specifically to cybersecurity communication, helping cybersecurity professionals make their expertise easier for clients, executives, and decision-makers to understand.

Why only 7 active clients?
This is personalized coaching. The value comes from working directly on your actual cybersecurity communication — not from putting hundreds of people through a generic course. To keep it focused and personal, I work with a maximum of 7 active clients at a time.
Is this a cohort?
No. This is private 1:1 coaching focused on your own work and communication challenges.
Is this generic public speaking training?
No. You don't need to be a public speaker.

You don't need power poses.
You don't need to be motivational.
You don't need to be charismatic.

You need to be easier to understand. The focus is technical communication: explaining complex topics, communicating recommendations, preparing client conversations, and answering difficult questions. No generic communication exercises, no months of theory — three focused sessions built around the communication that matters in your work.
What happens after the sessions?
You keep the framework, session recordings, and reference materials so you can continue applying what you learn.
Can my company pay for this?
Yes. Many professionals use professional development or training budgets for coaching. Here's a short template you can send your manager:
What if I don't get value?
If you attend all three sessions, make an honest effort to apply the framework, and still don't feel you received value, reach out and I'll make it right. Simply email darren@onetencommunications.ca
